Hell, even better would be customization. Not so much in a survival setting where the player is just a lone character. Set characters work better in strong narrative games like the Witcher or Last of Us. It's also nice to have a neutral main character, so that people can roleplay how they like, without being tied to a specific character. Having an AI chatting to us is kind of neat, but a lot of people enjoy the "sole survivor" feeling and isolation. It would also be nice to have a more solitary experience. There could be some giant plants that open/close based on light. And even allow the player to set up a series of lights to create safe routes. Possibly having little lit patches (some glowing plants, some alien tech) that you can dash between. Think of swimming the depths with a leviathan that hates light, so you use your lights to keep it away from you. Either being attracted to it, or scared off by it. But there should be a few things that react to light. The "glow in the dark" critters you've done before were cool. Including some new stuff like say, photosensitive creatures. I'd like to see more variety in life forms. Maybe some bizarre floating island out somewhere, possibly some floating alien construction (that you access from underwater). Some small islands in a shallows area, but barely anything beyond that.

Subnautica: Below Zero is still on Early Access, and the developers are already working on another game. It features identical gameplay, but with more land-based areas to explore. Subnautica: Below Zero is the sequel to the original game. The main objective is simple, explore and survive. Most of the game is set underwater, with a full day-and-night cycle that affects gameplay. The game features the exploration of a vast ocean on an alien planet.
